There were many notable events in 1901. Australia was united as a Federal Commonwealth and its Parliament convened for the first time in Melbourne.
In the United Kingdom and, across the Empire, a major event was the passing of Queen Victoria, aged 81.
For those of us in Cornwall and, more particularly at The Poldhu, we all know that Guglielmo Marconi achieved his first trans-Atlantic radio transmission on the 12th of December. As she was then, Lottie Williams was a week old when Marconi was successful in his landmark transmission.
Lottie married Joe Davis in 1922 and ran a thriving business in the West Midlands for many years. Lottie moved to Cornwall when she was a youthful 99 years old and then decided to move to The Poldhu when 103.
It’s hard to believe that our wonderful friend and resident at The Poldhu celebrated her 108th Birthday last week.
Lottie’s week was a busy one. Amongst the family events and stacks of cards and gifts, Lottie found time to rekindle her media career. Not content with the press hacks, Lottie also broadcast in the morning on BBC Radio Cornwall and, on the evening of her Birthday, on BBC Television’s Spotlight.
Lottie wrapped up her Television interview by suggesting that a current ambition is to reach 110. We all hope so too – she’s a great friend with endless happiness and humour.
