Designed and built as a luxury hotel, The Poldhu was once patronised by royalty, Prime Ministers and Hollywood stars such as Clark Gable, and was the location of Marconi’s first transatlantic wireless communications. It rests in a spectacular location overlooking Poldhu Cove on the Lizard Peninsula, close to the picturesque village of Mullion and a short drive from the town of Helston. The Poldhu was acquired by The Swallowcourt Group in the early 1980’s and converted into a first-class nursing and residential home.

The Poldhu combines the class and elegance of its auspicious history with new features, from its grand conservatory entrance and comfortable rooms to sunny lounges and large dining areas with magnificent views that sweep along the Cornish coastline and out to sea. Open, light and airy the building provides plenty of space for its residents to spend time, whether they are meeting family, socialising with friends, or just taking time out to relax.

The Poldhu sits in nearly ten acres of landscaped grounds encompassing flat lawns and pathways. Residents can take advantage of the Lizard’s temperate climate and spend time in the gardens, and more active residents can be tempted by the breathtaking views from the coastal footpath that runs through the grounds.

The character of The Poldhu means that all rooms are individual, this allows us to offer a choice of care packages to suit individual requirements, the cost of these packages depend upon the size and location of room and the level of care needed.

Respite Care

The Poldhu offers respite care packages providing necessary breaks for carers and families. A respite stay can be for a couple of days, a few weeks or longer. Costs are dependent on the choice of room and the level of care required.

Residential Care

Our residential care packages are for people who no longer want the burden of running a home, or for those who may find themselves alone perhaps after losing a partner and wish to enjoy the companionship of others. As The Poldhu also provides nursing care there is no need to go through the trauma of finding a new home should your care needs increase. Our residential care packages can also be combined with our nursing packages for couples who want to stay together when one partner needs nursing care. Costs of our residential care packages vary depending on size and location of your chosen room.

Nursing Care

Our nursing care packages are provided by professional, qualified nurses for people who require general nursing care to those needing more specialised levels of care. Costs are dependent on a combination of room size and location and the level of nursing care required.

At The Poldhu we have a dedicated Recreational Co-ordinator who ensures there is a wide range of social and leisure activities offered to residents appropriate to age and medical condition. These activities are varied and include attending outside clubs, community based events and trips out in our specially adapted minibus. An example of our recreational timetable can be found in the Latest Information section.

Eating well gives a joy to life and contributes immensely to goodwill and happy companionship. Our three qualified and experienced chefs make use of fresh local produce to offer residents a varied menu that caters for all tastes. Requests for favourite foods are welcomed, and any special diets can be catered for.

Residents can take all meals in our magnificent dining room, sitting comfortably alone or amongst friends and colleagues and enjoying the panoramic sea views through the bay windows. They may also choose to dine in their rooms if they wish. Family are always welcome to join in with meals when visiting. Morning coffee and afternoon tea with freshly baked cakes and pastries are also served in the lounges, and residents can always request something to eat between meals if they wish.
